GRAPE: ALBARIÑO

Albariño or Alvarinho is a variety of white wine grape grown in Galicia, Monção and Melgaço, where it is used to make varietal white wines. Albariño is actually the Galician name for the grape. The grape is noted for its distinctive aroma, very similar to that of Viognier, Gewurztraminer, and Petit Manseng, suggesting apricot and peach. The wine produced is unusually light, and generally high in acidity with alcohol levels of 11.5–12.5%.

GRAPE: RIESLING

A great white wine grape associated most obviously, but not exclusively, with Germany and Alsace. It varies in style, from the low-alcohol wines of the Mosel in Germany, to the full-bodied classic wines of Alsace, to the stony, lemon-and-lime ripeness of Australian Riesling and the wildly aromatic New Zealand styles. The grape can show hints of green apples, lemon or white peach when young, with the typical kerosene bouquet developing with age. An ideal match too many of Montys’ dishes.

GRAPE: SAUVIGNON BLANC

Sauvignon blanc is one of the most popular white grape in many of the world’s wine regions and it gets its name from the French words sauvage (wild) and blanc (white) due to its early origins. An exceptionally fine white grape, distinctively aromatic, it is responsible for some of the world’s most popular white wines: Sancerre, PouillyFumé and Menetou-Salon, for example, in France, and a host of Sauvignons and Fumé Blancs from elsewhere. New Zealand Sauvignon is now considered a classic style. The perfect thirst quencher, it works with so many dishes.

GRAPE: VIOGNIER

Viognier is a white-wine grape variety known for producing textural, aromatic wines with pronounced stonefruit flavours; ‘apricots and steel’ are the variety’s classic flavour associations. On the nose, Viognier wines can also be very herbal, with aromas of chamomile, lavender, thyme and even a hint of pine. In aged examples and sweeter styles, this potentially overpowering herbality is softened by honeyed notes.
